With all the diet fads and trends out there today it’s hard to know how to eat right. Eating right doesn’t have to be a challenge and doesn’t have to include copious amounts of mung beans (unless you’re into that). Following a low carb diet is not for everyone but it can help you lose weight, lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Eating smart is important and doesn’t have to be complicated.

Meat
Beef, chicken, pork, and turkey are all considered to be low carb. Not only are these meats delicious they also contain nutrients like iron, B12, and beneficial fatty acids. An important reminder is to always try and get high quality meat and not highly-processed meats like store-bought jerky and bacon which contain unhealthy preservatives. Eggs
Eggs are another great source of protein and are also a good source of selenium and vitamin D. A study done by the Rochester Center for Obesity Research showed that eating eggs for breakfast can actually lower your caloric intake all day long and result in weight loss of 3 or more pounds a month.Eggs also provide your body with iron and zinc which can help bolster your immune system and help keep you active all day long.

Fish
Eating fish makes you smart, really. Fish is packed full of protein and vitamin D but also contain omega-3 fatty acids which can not only essential in helping children in growth and development but also can help adults improve their memory and help ward off age-related diseases that cause degeneration. Salmon and herring contain the largest amounts of vitamin D and wild caught fish have higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Make sure you are buying ethically sourced fish and remember that fish cooked in batter is not part of a low carb diet.

Vegetables
Vegetables are naturally low in fats and carbs and with such a variety of options they are a great way to eat healthier. They are also packed with dietary fibre, potassium, folic acid and Vitamin C. Potassium has also been shown to reduce blood pressure. Make sure that you are choosing different colored vegetables to benefit from the full array of vitamins and minerals that they contain. A good guide to follow is to fill and least half your plate with veggies.

Nuts & Seeds
Eating nuts and seeds can help you on your weight loss journey but also help you maintain a healthy heart and brain. Nuts and seeds are a great snack if you’re on the go and can also help you to stop binge eating, they contain healthy fats and dietary fiber that make you feel full longer. These power snacks can help lower cholesterol and beat your cravings.

Low carb diets can help curb your hunger, help you lose unwanted weight and help your body maintain better blood sugar and insulin levels.
